Japanese Among Most Outward Looking

Despite souring public sentiment about their domestic economy and the belief that Japan’s role on the world stage has plateaued or is on the decline, the Japanese are among the most outward looking, internationally engaged publics among major countries recently surveyed by the Pew Research Center. The Japanese public believes that involvement in the global economy is good for the country and that Japan should help other nations deal with their problems.

Yet the Japanese embrace of the world has its limits. Despite quite negative views of China and the widespread belief that China’s emergence as a world power poses a threat for Japan, the Japanese overwhelmingly reject a more robust military role for their country in the Asia-Pacific region.
